A barrier lotion or cream is a product that is applied directly to the surface of the skin creating a topical physical barrier to maintain and protect your skin barrier from irritants and preventing the skin from drying out.

Barrier lotions keep skin moisturized by infusing the epidermis with emollients and water while also trapping it all in with an occlusive film. “Occlusives” form a protective seal over the skin to lock in hydration and the products applied under them.
